How Do You Win? Read and Learn!
By Linden Bergeron-Mirsky
Class 3-304
One day I went to a chess tournament. I was excited but also a little nervous. I had played in one chess tournament before.
When we got there I went to Room 228 where the other PS 8 students were. Before the first game I wrote down the room I was in and how to get there. I went to the board I was at. Then the games started. I was black (at each number, white’s move is first and black’s is second).
Game 1:
1. d4 d5
2. Nc3 Nf6
3. Nf3 Bf5
4. e3 e6
5. Be2 Bb4
6. Bd2 O-O
7. O-O Nc6
8. Ne5 Qd6
9. b3 Nxe5
10. dxe5 Qxe5
11. e4 Bd6
12. g3 Bh3
13. Rc1 Bc5
14. Bf4 Qd4
15. Qxd4 Bxd4
16. Bf3 Ng4
17. Bg2 Bxf2
18. Kf1 Bxe1
19. Bxh3 Bxc3
20. Re1 Bxe1
21. Kxe1 dxe4
22. Bxg4 e5
23. Bxe5 Re8
24. Bxc7 Rc8
25. Bf4 Rxc2
26. Kd1 Bxa2
27. Bd7 Re7
28. Bc8 e3
29. Bg4 e2
30. Bxe2 Rxe2
31. Bd2 Rxd2
32. Ke1 Rxh2
33. Kf1 Rh1 mate

Then I won the second, third and fourth games. The second game was 42 moves, the third game was 30 moves, and the fourth game was probably 150 moves. I stopped recording each move after 82 moves.

PS 8 Chess Instructor Nick Chatzilias Talks About the Tournament
On November 9th, five students from PS 8′s after-school Chess Club competed in the Chess in the Schools’ Rookie Tournament hosted by PS 16 in Williamsburg. Don’t let the word “Rookie” fool you though - this was no easy tournament! PS 8 students Emma B., Paloma H-G., Sam G., Linden B-M. and Ava D. represented the school admirably. In an elementary section of more than 200 chess players from around the city, our team had some outstanding results. Ava and Linden won all four of their games, with Ava taking first place and Linden taking third place! Congratulations to all the players!

More about Chess at PS 8…
All PS 8 students, in partnership with the Let’s Play Chess Program, receive 15 weeks of in-class chess instruction in the second and third grades. The PS 8 after-school Chess Club offers third, fourth and fifth graders a great opportunity to study the game more deeply and compete against higher skilled players. Be on the lookout for more chess tournament news as we plan on competing again in December!
