6TH GRADE SEES THE BROOKLYN BALLET

On Monday, February 26th the whole 6th grade went to Brooklyn Ballet to see a ballet performance. Once we arrived, we were immediately seated in the Brooklyn Ballet dance theater. Everyone seemed very excited to be there, and it was a pretty good experience. First, we had a voiced introduction from a choreographer that works there. She explained what we were going to get to see that day, a few written ballet symbols, and then introduced us to the dance company that also works there with a dance performance choreographed by her. It was very vibrant and fun to watch, a lot of the students thought.

In the beginning of the first dance, they were all dancing and then they would all go backstage except for one of them, and that one would do a solo while the choreographer said their name, where they’re from, and when they started dancing. Then that person would go backstage, and the rest would come out afterwards without the previous soloist and the whole cycle would go repeat until everyone was introduced. All the students were so amazed when James (one of the dancers) did his solo because he could moonwalk, do a robot type of thing, a wave, it was just overall amazing!

Soon after, the choreographer spoke about the next dance that was going to be performed which was a duet between Christine (another dancer) and James which was also a great performance. It was called  ‘the Brooklyn nutcracker’. There were so many things to think about after watching it because it was a pretty in-depth piece of choreography. As soon as they finished the duet, everyone was clapping and cheering.

As everyone was starting to settle down, stop clapping, and finish talking, the choreographer presented a piece to us that she said not many other schools get to view. I guess everyone was happy to know we’re one of the very little percentage that got to see it.  It was a hip hop/ballet fusion. Honestly, it looked super amazing because there was this huge piece of artwork in the back, the female dancer was dressed in a black tutu and leotard with graffiti work on it. Definitely, the best dance of the whole entire show. Everyone was amazed, I heard people talking about how the leotard and tutu were such show stoppers. The company bowed, and then we exited the theater and walked back to school to continue a regular school day.

Welcome to the PS 8 Garden!

Thirteen 5th grade Students (Tiggy, Mia, Bo B., Dylan B., Ian, Gian, Hassan, Gavin, Daniel, Cameron, Joseph, Leanne, and Rowan) and Ms. Melissa completed the PS 8 Garden Mural during Advisory.  All of the kids worked together in four weeks.  We took time to research and did lots of painting to complete the 1st ever PS 8 mural.  We overcame many challenges to complete it.  We all agreed that we did an extraordinary thing working together.  I hope you enjoy looking at it!

First, we took time to think and sketch the way it looks now.  It solves two problems — one, it gives the garden some flare, and two, it hides the area where garbage is stored.  Hopefully, it will help make the garden look beautiful.

How many fractions does it take to change a light bulb?

For the past few months in S.T.E.M. we have been integrating our writing skills into our math skills. We do this by “Humor Math Writing” where we take what we have learned these past few units and give them humorous human-like qualities. Have you ever heard of a decimal running for president? Or an area model wanted for committing a felony? These are only a few examples of what we have been working on. Some other examples are diaries, comics, advice columns, and more, starring units, strategies and measurements. Here are a few examples of some 5th grade student work.

The science show was really cool! The way Professor Kezerashvili interacted with the kids in my class was amazing. We all had a great time telling him answers to questions he asked and participating. We were wowed by some of his tricks and the amazing science behind it. It was a good feeling knowing we knew what he was talking about and some of the science behind his tricks. We loved this whole magic show and participating!

Professor Kezerashvili chairs the physics department at New York City College of Technology (City Tech College) when he isn’t presenting the “Magic of Physics” to middle school students. Stay tuned for more collaborations between MS8 and City Tech College. MS8 Teachers Nicole Marcellin and Leigh Stumme and MS8 parent Diane McGarvey have been working to determine the best opportunities for collaboration with this amazing university and downtown Brooklyn neighbor to MS8! It is an exciting new partnership.

PS 8 is No Place For Hate

On the morning of March 14, 2018, our entire school headed outside into the cold and linked our arms in solidarity on the one month anniversary of the Florida school shooting. The PS 8 students, however, were not at all alone. Parents, teachers from grades K to 5, and the specials teachers had also joined us.

It all started right after our February break. We came back to school and talked about what had happened. A surprisingly large amount of people did not know what was going on. Personally, I think that kids not knowing, or even just not having access to important information, is half of the problem. The other half is not acting on that issue. My teacher had that part figured out ahead of time. She had us help her make a list of things we could do to raise awareness at PS 8, and at the same time, do something about an issue we all cared about. One thing we talked about was participating in the walkout.  A few weeks later, my teacher Ms. Angie told us that she and the other fifth grade teachers had talked to all of the teachers in the other grades in the school, and they had decided to support us in participating!

Finally, it was the day of the walkout. A fellow ambassador from “No Place For Hate” named Frances and I read a poem over the loudspeaker that began the event.

The Tinfoil Ball

One day in 5th Grade, about a month and 3 weeks ago, Caitlin and Bo were sitting at lunch.  Caitlin took the two pieces of tinfoil from their sandwiches and crumpled them together.  Bo looked at the small ball like a 49-er looking at a pile of gold.

“Hey!” she said, “I have a great idea!  What if we made a giant tinfoil ball?!”  And that’s where the whole idea sprouted.  They started collecting tinfoil from people’s lunches, and along with the help of Joseph and Hudson, the ball started to grow.  Buuuuuut, we still need more tinfoil!

The largest tinfoil ball ever made was created by Richard Roman from Ohio.  His ball weighed 1,615 pounds!  So if you have any tinfoil, we need it!

And that’s the story of the TINFOIL BALL.  Though the story isn’t over yet!

Celebr8 Science Pride

On April 18, the middle school cafeteria was bustling with aspiring scientists and their parents, teachers and staff, community members, and guest scientists. Some guest scientists included students from NYU Tandon School of Engineering, teachers from Riverdale Avenue Middle School and MS 8 alumni. The middle schoolers had been working on their projects for months now, and were excited, to say the least, about presenting their boards to anyone who was willing to listen. Several lower school students also participated to showcase their scientific work. The science teachers of the middle school and the PTA were almost as excited as the students, if not more.

Lined up on the far wall were stations to teach young minds about simple scientific concepts. Among these were the slime station, candy deoxyribonucleic acid models, and the CCM station, all manned by enthusiastic 7th and 8th grade volunteers. The fair had visitors from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, who taught students and parents alike how to make chamomile and peppermint tea bags. Mathnasium was present, and also provided free protractors to anyone who completed a series of challenging problems. Staff from VR Bar had brought equipment including virtual reality headsets and a projector, and were playing games such as office simulator with students in the far corner of the cafeteria. The 8th grade graduation team set up a bake sale filled with snacks and treats for all.

Boards were lined up in rows on the cafeteria tables stretching from one end to the other. Students proudly presented their work to inquisitive parents and guest scientists, and received shiny red ribbons from the scientists. MS8 young scientists walked away with a great sense of pride.

6th Grade Takes Its Weather Studies Outside!

On Thursday, the 6th grade scientists at MS 8 took their learning outside! It was way too beautiful of a day to learn about weather inside, so we headed out to MetroTech to make observations and use weather tools. We collect data about the types of clouds we saw in the sky, we used 3 different types of thermometers (digital, infrared and bulb) to compare temperature and we even used a homemade tool to calculate the relative humidity (ps… we were spot on with our calculations!) We had a blast and cannot wait for our next outdoor lesson!!

2nd Grade’s Brooklyn Botanical Garden Visit

Last Friday the 2nd grade classes journeyed to the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens to inspect the gardens and take notes on how they had changed since their last visit this past fall.

Everyone enjoyed the warm weather and enjoyed the wide open expanses. Running, laughing, inspecting and loving their time outside, they took full advantage of the massive place.

After checking out the cherry blossoms, a rock garden, the desert greenhouse, the tropical rain forest, the Children’s Garden, and the Japanese tea garden, many of the kids made their way to hang with the famous turtles and giant koi. It was truly a special day.

7th Graders Focus on Setting in Short Stories

During our last unit, students thought deeply about the different levels and dimensions of setting. Through an exploration of short stories — “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, and “We’re the Only Colored People Here” by Gwendolyn Brooks” — students engaged in a variety of activities to help setting come to life as they read. For example, during the reading of “The Most Dangerous Game,” students used close-reading strategies to help them determine the physical layout of Ship-Trapped Island in order to help them visualize the plot events. While some students designed detailed maps, other students created three-dimensional models.

Throughout the unit, students also practiced crafting the introductions to their own original short stories by drawing on our study of setting and figurative language.
