Our 3rd graders attended an interactive concert as the culminating event of Carnegie Hall ’s Link Up curriculum. We’re fortunate to be able to attend at Carnegie Hall itself, but the curriculum is also shared by dozens of orchestras around the world who hold their own interactive concerts. This year’s theme was “The Orchestra Moves,” relating to the different ways that music moves (through time, through the air, from instrument to instrument) and moves us (dancing, playing instruments, working together). In class, since February, we mastered five of the songs: the program’s theme song “Come to Play” and Offenbach’s “Barcarolle” on soprano recorder; and “Cicade Maravilhosa,” the Toreador song from _Carmen_ and the “Blue Danube” waltz vocally— and learned the samba moves for “Cidade Maravilhosa.” At the concert, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s sounded sublime, the visual projections were stunning, and every song was a show-stopper, whether because of the tenor playing the Toreador, the tango dancers, or the Carnivale drummer. It was an amazing event I hope we can continue to attend for years to come.
