On May 9th our fourth graders attended the 2019 Young People’s Concerts for Schools in David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center. The program, “Coming to New York – Immigrant Voices,” delved into the American melting pot through performances of music by Bartok Huang Ruo, Roberto Sierra, Kareem Roustom, Gabriela Lena Frank and New York Philharmonic Very Young Composers.

New York has long been home to wave after wave of immigrants who bring their distinctive cultures: customs, styles, stories, and, of course, music.

These ingredients, and much more, have inspired immigrant composers writing for the orchestra. Young People’s Concerts explores and celebrate these connections, with music from composers with wide-ranging cultural backgrounds. Our school was honored to hear a piece called
Ociantrose (World Primer), by Beijing born Mack Scocca-Ho, an 11-year old from the New York Philharmonic’s Very Young Composer program. What an amazing experience for our students.
