Second Grade Gets Spicy

Earlier this month, Shalini’s “Little” Kitchen came to spice things up in Ms. DeWan and Mr. Levy’s second grade class with an Indian food cooking workshop. During the hands-on class students made their own mango lassi (an Indian style mango smoothie) and learned about the spices saffron and cardamom. The class discovered that saffron is the world’s most expensive spice and cardamom comes in third. They considered themselves very lucky to be able to use some in class (and take small samples of ground cardamom home!)

The second part of the workshop Shalini demonstrated how to make Indian rotis (flat bread) using yogurt and flour and then distributed samples so that kids could taste-test this delicious, traditional Indian staple.  The sample roti had a secret ingredient that kids had to try and guess. After several guesses such as banana and sugar, it was finally revealed that the secret ingredient was butternut squash, and that they had all just eaten a healthy vegetable.  They couldn’t believe it! At the end of the workshop the kids enjoyed rotis with raita (spiced yogurt). A big thank you to PS8 Mommy and owner of Shalini’s Kitchen for this wonderful, cultural experience.
