Throughout the year our second grade classes will be rocking and rolling by studying pebbles, sand and silt. This introduction to the concepts in earth science will be an exciting one as nothing is more magical to kids than the world around them. Students will observe various rocks, earth materials and natural resources and will be provided with multiple, “hands-on” activities and experiments to foster student engagement and curiosity.
As part of the Rock Study, second grade classes traveled to the The American Museum of Natural History to observe, take notes and sketch in the The Harry Frank Guggenheim Hall of Minerals and Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems, but not before touching a real meteorite.

Touching a meteorite is out of this world!

Ahnighito is 4.5-billion-year-old (and 34 tons!). Kids got to touch something that is nearly as old as the Sun! (source)
To make things more interesting, groups of kids ran up and down the carpeted steps on mini scavenger hunts to find their birthstones.
While others kids pretended to be shopping for their favorites.
Stay tuned for more updates on this dirty unit – we haven’t hit rock bottom on puns yet.
